Vegan leather from banana crop waste

Founded by Jinali Mody, along with early team members Maggie Boreham and Isobel Campbell, Banofi Leather is disrupting the leather industry with its plant-based alternative made from banana crop waste.

By repurposing a portion of the 120 million tons of agricultural waste produced annually into a sustainable, wearable material, Banofi eliminates toxic waste while significantly reducing water usage and carbon emissions. The company is committed to making eco-friendly, high-quality materials accessible to fashion brands worldwide.

Impact

Banofi Leather’s 90% bio-based alternative not only supports local economies by increasing farmers’ incomes by 30% but also creates high-quality jobs for predominantly female workers. By championing environmental stewardship, their processes reduce carbon emissions by 90% compared to traditional leather processing. By eliminating the tanning process, Banofi prevents chromium and heavy metal deposition in waste water streams.

Given the urgency of climate and environmental action, it’s clear that no single individual or company can drive change alone, so it was truly inspiring to witness the potential of every team involved. For Banofi Leather, winning the $1 million Hult Prize will be a game-changer in our mission to combat the huge environmental impacts of the leather industry.
